Round 1 Results
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – It was a struggle for many teams in the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate today and that included the University of Tennessee at Martin, as the Skyhawks were one of 14 teams to shoot over par at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
          Â
UT Martin shot a 306 (+18) today to rank 16th in the team standings, tying for the third-most pars (56) in the field. Elon (282, -6) holds the team lead after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament as only three schools navigated the course for below-par scores this morning.
          Â
Tate Chumley led the way for the Skyhawks today, as the sophomore shot a 73 (+1) to rank just outside the top-25 in the individual standings. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native collected three of the team's five birdies on the day while also notching 12 pars.
          Â
Ross Redmont followed closely behind with a 74 (+2) this morning, closing out his day with a birdie after also tapping in 14 par putts. Accounting for one of four eagles on the first day was UT Martin senior Cameron Smith (79, +7), who accomplished that feat on the par-5, 515-yard Hole No. 11.
          Â
Rounding out the Skyhawk scoring lineup was Peyton Dix, who tallied 12 pars – including eight in a row on the back-nine – on his way to an 80 (+8). Nick Wolf posted one birdie and nine pars during the first round before carding a final tally of 81 (+9).
"We had too many penalty shots today that led to double bogeys," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We hit a lot of balls out-of-bounds and we didn't have a lot of birdies to cover those scores up. We need to work on our short game more and be sure to get off to a better start tomorrow."
          Â
The Skyhawks tee off from 9:45 to 10:21 a.m. local time for Round 2 on Sunday, Feb. 24. UT Martin is paired with Air Force, Murray State and DePaul during tomorrow's action.
