MARTIN, Tenn. – The third seeded University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team saw its season come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship, falling 3-2 to sixth seeded Belmont on Sunday afternoon.
The Skyhawks finished the 2019 campaign with an 8-6-5 overall record. Ranked as one of the youngest teams in the country, UT Martin arguably overachieved after losing over 71 percent of the team's scoring output from its championship campaign a season ago. Despite the team's inexperience and a stock of freshman contributors, the Skyhawks battled tough all season by pushing an unbeaten streak to five games heading into the conference tournament and earned the No. 3 seed which was accompanied by the right to host the first two rounds of the OVC Soccer Championship.
UT Martin battled throughout the contest and scored early as Bella Roberts found the back of the net off an assist from Jill Hildreth in the match's sixth minute. Belmont would answer back in the 13th minute as Julie Garst recovered a deflection to tie the match.
The game would remain knotted up until the 71st minute as the Bruins found a goal by Avery Nowak to take their first lead of the contest. UT Martin would fight back, finding the equalizer as Roberts scored her second goal of the game with a header off a perfect cross from Alice Adams to knot the game.
With both teams remaining aggressive, Belmont nailed a shot off the crossbar before Garst rebounded the attempt and pushed her second goal past the diving keeper for the ultimate game-winning goal with nine minutes to play.
