KILLEN, Ala. – Mother Nature intervened during Day 1 of the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational today as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team was only able to get in 18 holes at the Turtle Point Yacht Country Club.
The Skyhawks find themselves on top of the nine-team leaderboard, as their score of 287 (-1) this morning was three shots better than second-place North Alabama. UT Martin leads the tournament in birdies (18), par-3 scoring (3.20, +4) and par-4 scoring (3.96, -2).
"The conditions this morning were the toughest we've seen this fall," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "The guys did a great job of handling the wind and rain and posting a solid first round."
Individually, UT Martin boasts the tournament leader in senior Jack Story. The Dickson, Tenn. native recorded six birdies today and is tied with the North Alabama duo of Ike Alexander and Karl-Filip Einarsson for first place out of 71 golfers with a score of 68 (-4).
The junior duo of Nick Wolf and Tate Chumley are also in the top-10 of the standings through the first day, as they each carded a 71 (-1) which is tied for ninth place. Chumley collected four birdies today while Wolf chipped in three birdies and a team-best 13 pars, recording countable scores in the process.
The Skyhawks' fourth counter today was Mason Chandler, who at one point birdied three consecutive holes before settling for a 77 (+5). Also representing UT Martin today was Ross Redmont, who birdied his opening hole and tacked on another birdie on the back-nine on his way to a 79 (+7).
Playing as an individual, Skyhawk freshman Jacob Uehlein secured a pair of birdies on his way to a 75 (+3).
"It was an awesome round by Jack," Swafford said. "He's been our leader all season. We have two others inside the top-10 and look to improve our play tomorrow as other schools are right behind us."
UT Martin will look to capture its fourth straight tournament championship tomorrow as the Skyhawks tee off the final round of play between 8:45 and 9:21 a.m. UT Martin will be hitting off the first tee and is paired alongside Murray State and host North Alabama.
