DICKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team carried on its dazzling start to the 2019-20 campaign today as the Skyhawks sit atop both the team and individual leaderboards through 36 holes at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
UT Martin accounts for a total score of 561 (-15) after two rounds of play at Greystone Golf Course, leading the 11-team field which includes eight Ohio Valley Conference schools. The Skyhawks shot a 279 (-9) this morning before following with a 282 (-6) during the afternoon portion. UT Martin leads second-place Austin Peay by three strokes thanks to a tournament-high 40 birdies and an event-best 4.53 scoring average (-19) on par-5 holes.
"It was another good day for us," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "We has a semi-slow start – it was a little chilly this morning and we started on a tough stretch of holes but we ended well in both rounds with several birdies. We counted everybody's score at least once today and we are looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow."
Playing in his hometown, Jack Story paces the individual leaderboard with a 136 (-8). The reigning OVC Golfer of the Month is in first place out of 71 participants after carding a 66 in Round 1 and a 70 in Round 2. The senior tops the field in par-4 scoring (3.70, -6), par-5 scoring (4.25, -6) and birdies (11) while also adding an eagle on his final hole of the first round – a par-5 playing at 520 yards.
Ross Redmont returned to action for the first time in nearly a month, placing fifth in the field after compiling a 139 (-5). The redshirt senior out of Memphis, Tenn. had been hampered with an injury but displayed his All-OVC form after piecing together rounds of 71 and 68 as an individual. He notched 10 birdies on the day – six of which came in the second round.
"I'm proud of Jack," Swafford said. "He knows this course well and he really looked comfortable out there today picking his targets. It was also good to have Ross back and playing well after requiring rest to heal a minor injury that kept him out of our last two tournaments."
In addition to Story and Redmont, UT Martin also boasts two more golfers in the top-10. Nick Wolf ranks eighth with a 141 (-3) after rounds of 72-69 while Jacob Uehlein's 142 (-2) is in ninth place after a 70-72 performance. Five of Wolf's eight birdies occurred in Round 2 while Uehlein evenly distributed his eight birdies with four in each round.
Tate Chumley (145, +1) and Mason Chandler (147, +3) rounded out the Skyhawk scoring lineup. Chumley's 71 in the afternoon was part of the team scoring as he accrued seven birdies today. Chandler delivered a countable 71 this morning on his way to six total birdies on the day.
UT Martin was also responsible for a pair of freshmen who are playing as individuals. Bryson Morrell accounted for a 146 (+2) following a 72-74 effort that included three birdies in each round. Luke Smith secured a 153 (+9) after shooting 75-78 today as all three of his birdies came in Round 1.
The Skyhawks will go for their third straight tournament victory while Story will look for his second medalist win of the season tomorrow. The final round begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as UT Martin is paired alongside OVC rivals Austin Peay and SIUE.
