BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin continued its fall slate over the weekend, as the Skyhawks were one of four teams to take part in the Samford Fall Round Robin.
UT Martin was joined by Lipscomb, host Samford and Troy in the three-day round robin event. Overall, the Skyhawks competed in 21 singles matches and nine doubles matches as part of their second fall tournament of the young 2019-20 season.
"I have been extremely pleased with how quickly this team has improved," UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. "They are exceptionally eager to learn and improve. Jule Streif and Aziza Aubin have really stepped up their level of play. At this pace, they should be one of the top teams in the OVC by spring."
The Skyhawk duo of Streif and Aubin each came away with impressive singles wins, both occurring on Friday morning against Troy. Streif managed a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Chunxi Guo while Aubin came away with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tijana Svitlica.
Amelia Campbell and Daphne Pratt earned a doubles win on Saturday morning, defeating the Lipscomb pair of Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik by a 6-2 margin.
UT Martin nearly tallied three more singles wins but each time, the Skyhawks were outlasted in the tiebreaking third set. Against Samford on Saturday afternoon, Aubin battled but fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to Holly Horsfall while fellow freshman Jillian Niedzialowski left it all on the court in a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 setback at the hands of Amanda Kilduff. Streif was responsible for the other near-victory for UT Martin as she dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 5-10 decision to Lipscomb's Emma Zakordoniec earlier this morning.
The Skyhawks are right back at it next weekend, as they will make the 180-mile trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals on Oct. 18-19.
