BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin senior Asel Jumamukhambetova was voted as the seventh-best returner in the Ohio Valley Conference tennis ranks, the league announced this morning.
This marks the second consecutive year that Jumamukhambetova has been crowned as a preseason top-10 player by the OVC's head coaches. The Atyrau, Kazakhstan native also chalked up All-OVC second team honors as a sophomore in 2016-17.
"I am glad to see that all of the coaches in the conference recognize Asel's talent," Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. "She has made tremendous improvements in her tennis since her freshman year. Asel put in a lot of hard work this summer and the result was obvious this fall."
Jumamukhambetova is coming off a spectacular fall season where she led the squad in both singles victories (10) and doubles wins (10). Playing exclusively at No. 1 throughout the fall campaign, she posted an overall .690 winning percentage over 29 decisions. She won the Titia Wilmink Singles Draw flight championship at the prestigious Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Oct. 26-27, defeating players from Samford, Indiana and South Alabama along the way.
Last season, Jumamukhambetova chalked up 22 combined victories (13 doubles, nine singles). She found her most success in doubles against OVC opposition, generating a 6-2 record which included a perfect 5-0 record over the final six matches of the season (one match went unfinished).
Jumamukhambetova enters the 2019 spring season with 110 total victories in her Skyhawk career. That includes a 27-16 record (.628 winning percentage) in OVC play.
The OVC also announced its preseason predicted order of finish today, as the league's head coaches tabbed UT Martin to finish seventh with 25 total points. Austin Peay and Murray State split the vote as the league favorite, as each tallied 58 points apiece.
"UT Martin tennis has a long history of finishing the season much higher than predicted," Taylor said. "The girls have already been working hard this semester but being picked seventh will only set a fire under them. It's not where you begin, it's where you end."
The Skyhawks officially begin the 2019 spring season on Thursday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on Samford.
