Day 1 Results
MADISON, Ill. – The lowest second round score in the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational belonged to the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, who trimmed 25 strokes off their first round score to rank fourth in the 17-team standings after Day 1 at the Gateway National Golf Links.
The Skyhawks shot a 274 (-10) during today's afternoon round, leapfrogging eight spots in the team standings after a 299 (+15) in the morning session. After the five members of the UT Martin scoring lineup recorded nine birdies in Round 1, the Skyhawks exploded for a tournament-best 21 birdies during the second round. The 274 second round score was six shots better than any other team in the field. Overall, UT Martin sits at 573 (+5) through 36 holes, seven strokes behind host SIUE (566, -2) for the top spot.
"I can't ever remember such a turnaround in my coaching career," Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "The conditions were ideal, the weather was overcast with no wind. It's not an easy golf course but I just told our guys after the first round that we are better than what we showed. They came out and played the best round of the season and made several birdies coming in, which really shot us up the standings. It just goes to show our inconsistency – we have players who can post these scores in any given round. We are striving for more consistency and finding the right mix of players."
In the Individual standings, UT Martin was keyed by Tate Chumley and Ross Redmont today. Chumley sits in second place in the field of 96 golfers with a 139 (-3), posting a 73 in the opening round and a 66 this afternoon. Chumley's first round included one birdie and 15 pars before carding a bogey-free Round 2 which involved five birdies and 13 pars. Meanwhile, Redmont is in a six-way tie for third place with a 140 (-2), accounting for rounds of 71 and 69. He collected three birdies this morning before tacking on four more birdies in Round 2.
Nick Wolf (77-71) was responsible for a 148 (+6) on the day, as he shook off a slow start to shoot 1-under par with four birdies over his final 27 holes. Jack Story showed the most improvement today, as he followed an 81 this morning with a 68 during the afternoon, posting eight birdies on the day for a final tally of 149 (+7). Four of Peyton Dix's five birdies on the day came in Round 2, as he produced scores of 78-76 for a 154 (+12).
Playing as an individual, Mason Chandler (75-79) combined for a 154 (+12) today, knocking in all four of his birdies during the opening round.
The Skyhawks will make a push for the team and individual titles tomorrow when the third and final round begins with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
