MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team kept up its hot streak as it downed Tennessee Tech by a 3-1 margin.
UT Martin (7-2, 2-0 OVC) was firing on all cylinders tonight as the Skyhawks outshot the Golden Eagles 19-6. The only blemish on UT Martin's play was a Tennessee Tech penalty kick late in the game that erased the shutout. Unfazed by the goal, the Skyhawks kept a calm head to come out victorious.
Leading the offense was senior Amy McGivern (two goals) while Alice Adams also netted a goal in the match. McGivern and Nicole Collins paced the club in shots as both put up four apiece. Alexius Thomas and Danae Kaldaridou each recorded an assist in the contest. Sara Ketis tallied a trio of swings followed by Jaden Hildreth's two. Rounding out the shot column was Skylor Keane, Kamryn Chappell, Bella Roberts, Katelyn Colvin, Skylar Boes and Adams with one each.
The Skyhawk defense shined again as the back line corps of Kamryn Chappell, Jacalyn Schubring, Kaci Mitchell and Bianca McFarland all kept the Tennessee Tech scorers at bay.
Goalkeeper Erica Myers was faced with no shots in the bout and logged another full 90 minute contest.
"We are delighted to be 2-0 in conference play and 7-2 on the season," head coach Phil McNamara said. "We keep pressing forward and I am pleased with how some of the players came off of the bench this evening. I think that the starting 11 played as good as they have all season to this point. Some players stepped in and helped out when we needed, so that was great to show our depth. Bella and Lexi really showcased how that depth has been so good to have this year as both really stepped up tonight. Nicole came in and attacked the Tennessee Tech defense and applied a ton of pressure on them on top of getting the pass to Amy for the assist. We asked Amy to be a bigger influence on the game tonight – and she was as she got the pair of goals. She has great potential from both shooting and power wise. It was just very encouraging to have several players come in and make an impact. It makes us feel really good in the long haul."
UT Martin drew first blood in the fourth minute as Adams took a nifty pass from Collins inside the box for an open look to put the Skyhawks up 1-0.
McGivern would get to work at the 55:03 mark as she found a pass from Thomas to head the ball into the right corner to give UT Martin a 2-0 lead. Roughly 15 minutes would pass before McGivern received a quick pass from Kaldaridou to net a header at point blank range and put the Skyhawks up by a 3-0 margin.
Tennessee Tech spoiled the shutout at the 83:27 mark as Kendall Powell was awarded a penalty kick and made the most of her opportunity to narrow the score 3-1.
UT Martin returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28 as the Skyhawks head to SIUE. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
