Day 1 Results
RICHMOND, Ky. – Tate Chumley, a sophomore on the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, is one shot off the individual lead after he posted the best two round of his collegiate career on Day 1 of the Raising Canes Intercollegiate at the Arlington Golf Course.
          Â
After coming into the tournament with a career low round of 71, Chumley reeled off back-to-back rounds of 69 to sit just a single stroke behind leaders Billy Basham of Eastern Kentucky, Ty Celone of Eastern Michigan and Kyle Slattery of SIUE. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native ranks second in the tournament in birdies (eight) and par-5 scoring (4.50, -2). His two-round total of 138 (-2) ranks fourth out of 94 golfers as he was one of only seven golfers to shoot below par through the tournament's first 36 holes.Â
          Â
Ross Redmont (145, +5) accounted for the second-best score for UT Martin today as he carded seven birdies on his way to scores of 72-73. The redshirt junior leads the Skyhawks in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) after the first two rounds.
Â
Peyton Dix followed with an overall score of 150 (+10) after back-to-back 75's which included a team-high 23 pars to go along with a pair of birdies. Nick Wolf (75-76, three birdies) and Cameron Smith (71-81, five birdies) completed the team scoring with scores of 151 (+11) and 152 (+12), respectively.
Â
Competing as an individual, Shelden Barina fired a 72 this morning and followed with a 79 this afternoon for an overall score of 151 (+11) which included four birdies.
Â
As a team, UT Martin rank fourth in the field with 25 birdies. The Skyhawks shot a 580 (+20) to come in seventh out of 15 teams in the standings. UT Martin shot a 287 (+7) during Round 1 before following with a 293 (+13) in Round 2.
Â
"This is a very difficult course to walk 36 holes on," Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "There is not a level lie anywhere – most of the time your feet are up and down or sideways. Most of our players didn't handle that very well in the second round and they also got tired after an 11-hour day. We lost our concentration level and hit a few wayward shots that we did not hit during the first round. We are still a work in progress but I look forward to a good bounce-back from our team tomorrow."
Â
UT Martin will look to move up the leaderboard as it completes the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16 with a 7:30 CST tee time.
