Day 1 Results
MURRAY, Ky. – Redshirt junior Ross Redmont pieced together back-to-back under-par rounds today as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team opened its season with 36 holes at the Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
          Â
Redmont opened his day with a 69 (-2) this morning before carding a 70 (-1) during the afternoon round. The Memphis, Tenn. native led the Skyhawks in birdies (nine) and par-3 scoring (2.88, -1) while he was also one of six players to lead the field in par-5 scoring (4.33, -4). His total of 139 (-3) is just one shot behind tri-leaders Austin Knight of Murray State, Zach Williams of Southern Indiana and Joe Muschong of Morehead State.
          Â
As a team, the Skyhawks are ranked fifth in the field of 12 teams with an overall score of 579 (+11). UT Martin shot a 285 (+1) this morning to rank second in the team standings before following with a 294 (+10) in Round 2. Murray State was the only team to shoot under par through 36 holes, as the host Racers shot a 564 (-4).
          Â
"We had a good first round but the second round was very disappointing," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "Through our six rounds of qualifying, I did not see these scores coming. The team posted good scores on tougher golf courses than what we are playing now. That's what makes it disappointing because they have performed much better than what they showed today. We will look for more consistent scores tomorrow."
          Â
Tate Chumley (144, +2) ranks in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard, as the sophomore posted identical rounds of 72 today. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native rolled in eight birdies throughout the course of the day while also leading the Skyhawks in par-4 scoring (4.05, +1).
          Â
After an opening-round 76 today, junior Jack Story was on fire during the second round. The junior from Dickson, Tenn. accounted for a 69 this afternoon, including one of only two eagles in the second round. For the day, he was responsible for a 145 (+3) – tying Redmont for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring (4.33, -4) to go along with six birdies while competing as an individual.
          Â
Nick Wolf (146, +4) followed closely behind with back-to-back rounds of 73 for UT Martin. Peyton Dix (77-71) shaved six strokes off his first-round score to finish with a 148 (+6) as an individual today. Mason Chandler also showed improvement today as the redshirt sophomore shot a 149 (+7) with scores of 76-73 as an individual.
          Â
The Skyhawk scoring lineup was rounded out by Cameron Smith (152, +10), who tallied an even-par 71 this morning before finishing with an 81. Freshman Shelden Barina made his collegiate debut today, posting an overall score of 159 (+17) with rounds of 80-79.
          Â
UT Martin will look to move up the leaderboard on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the third and final round takes place with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
