COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – Ross Redmont, a rising redshirt junior on the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, put the finishing touches on a remarkable performance at the 103rd Tennessee Amateur Championship this afternoon.
Redmont carded a 69 today to bring his four-round total to 282 (-6), which led to a three-way tie for first place in the field of 144 participants. That led to a playoff between Redmont, Aaron Ingalls of Jackson and current Clemson University golfer Kyle Cottam from Knoxville. Ingalls was able to manage the win on the second playoff hole.
The four-day tournament was held at Spring Creek Ranch, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Redmont posted a score of 70 during Tuesday's opening round and followed that with an even-par 72 on Wednesday. After a 71 on Thursday, Redmont found himself in sixth place and three shots off the leader through 54 holes.
A hot start on Friday rose Redmont into title contention, as the Memphis native birdied three of his first four holes. He made the turn today with a one-stroke lead and ended the round strong with birdies on his last two holes. Overall, the Memphis native accounted for seven of his 15 birdies in the tournament on Friday.
"I hit the ball really well off the tee and kept the ball in play," Redmont said. "Whenever I got out of position I just tried to play to the front of the greens, make my par and move to the next hole."
After ranking eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring average a year ago, Redmont hopes this result against a stacked field of the state's best players will propel him to an even stronger campaign in 2018-19.
"It definitely has given me a lot of confidence heading into the upcoming year," Redmont said. "I feel very confident in having a good year and I think the team will also have a good year."
