DICKSON, Tenn. – Several weather delays throughout the day resulted in a standstill today for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
Heavy rain hit the Greystone Golf Course early Monday morning and continued throughout the early afternoon. Once the precipitation subsided, the 10 teams took to the course at 2:45 p.m. and finished 11-12 holes each before nightfall cut the first round short.
Tate Chumley, Nick Wolf, Ross Redmont, Peyton Dix and Shelden Barina comprise the Skyhawks' scoring lineup. Cameron Smith, Jack Story and Mason Chandler are also representing UT Martin as individuals.
As a team, the Skyhawks accounted for a 2-over par score a little over midway through the first round. Chumley, Redmont and Barina all stand at even-par while Dix (+2) and Wolf (+4) complete the scoring five. Smith (-1), Story (E) and Chandler (+5) also battled through the weather conditions today.
"Despite all of the rain we had today, the course is not muddy," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "There is casual water everywhere and we are having to play special rules but the greens are good – they were squeegeed and there were blowers everywhere to get them in shape. The wind was blowing out of the north and it got a bit cold this afternoon so it's not optimal conditions but our team played very well today. We hope to carry that over into tomorrow."
Team and individual scoring is incomplete at the moment as the tournament format has now changed from a 54-hole event to 36 holes. The first round will resume on Tuesday morning with an 8:30 tee time as the Skyhawks are paired with Tennessee State and Binghamton. The second and final round is scheduled to follow in the afternoon.
