Mears is credited with helping the UT Martin athletics department grow and excel in many areas. All of the men's athletic programs were nationally ranked at times during his tenure as athletics director.
Joining UT Martin following retirement from his legendary basketball coaching career at UT Knoxville, he brought the same competitiveness and promotional flair into his position at UT Martin. The school won its first of several Gulf South Conference championships during his tenure.
