Nanney excelled for four years as a golfer at UT Martin. He capped off his Pacer career in 1985 by being named a first team NCAA Division II All-American after being named third for two consecutive years.

He was UTM's medalist and participated in the NCAA National Championship all four years. He was also a three-time All-Gulf South Conference performer. He was medalist in five tournaments in his career and finished as the runner-up in the 1985 Tennessee State Amateur Tournament.
