Holmes is regarded as one of the top running backs in UT Martin football history. He was named to the 1971 All-American team. He rushed for 2,005 yards in his career, including 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns in his junior and senior seasons. He was the only unanimous selection on the first All-Gulf South Conference team in 1971. He was UTM's Most Valuable Back for three years and was team co-captain as a senior. He was an All-District NAIA pick in 1971 and was twice honored as a conference player of the week.
Holmes signed as a free agent with Miami Dolphins in 1972.
