Gearin was the coach of the first UT Martin intercollegiate women's basketball team and played a major role in why the University is regarded as a pioneer in women's athletics.
She coached the UTM Lady Pacers' teams from 1969-78. The team won the 1970-71 Tennessee College Women's Sports Federation and won three Western Division titles. Her overall basketball coaching record was 104-86.
She also coached women's volleyball from 1969-73 and was coach of the UTM badminton club from 1968-70.
