James Henson*

Henson spent a career spanning three decades on the UT Martin sports scene. He served as the school's athletic director from 1947 to 1971, head football coach from 1947 to 1951, head men's basketball coach from 1951-52, and tennis coach from 1951 to 1980. Henson also served as chairman of the Department of Health and Physical Education in addition to his coaching duties.
Henson was primarily responsible for starting tennis as an intercollegiate sport at UTM. He coached UTM teams to more than 260 wins over the 30 seasons.
Henson earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Mississippi State and his Master of Arts degree from Alabama. He earned four letters in football and two in track while at Mississippi State.
