Short was one of the top all-around athletes during the UTJC days. He was an all-conference end on the 14-member UTJC team that was undefeated in 1932, scoring 398 points and allowing only 21 in eight games.
He played both offense and defense in every game during his three-year career. He was a forward on the basketball team and captained the team his sophomore year. In baseball, he pitched and played rightfield. He was voted Best All-Around Male Student and was vice-president of the "T" Club.
