Danny Watkins was one of the top linebackers in UT Martin football history. He was named the 1976 Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Year, leading the team to an 8-3 record while ranking 10th nationally. He recorded 93 tackles and 48 assists for a defense which was tops in rushing and second in scoring defense at the time. He was an honorable mention Associated Press All-American.
He served as team captain both his junior and senior seasons. The UT Martin teams posted a 16-6 overall record during his final two years. During his time, he set the program's career tackles mark with 426 while earning All-GSC honors three times and claiming a pair of GSC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In 1978 he signed a professional contract with the Oakland Raiders.
