Elam was an instrumental part of the UT system family for more than 60 years. He graduated from UT Knoxville in 1931 and from the UT School of Law in 1934.
He became a member of the UT Athletics Board in 1951 and a member of the UT Board of Trustees in 1956. He was named as Chairman of the Athletics Board in 1959 and today his name is synonymous with UT Athletics across the state.
