Rockholt enjoyed great success as a two-year golfer at UT Martin. He was a two-time All-American, twice named to the All Gulf South Conference team, and was a two-time runnerup in the GSC tournament. He also won several amateur events.

He was the winner of the Tennessee Intercollegiate in 1975 and was runnerup in the Tennessee State Amateur even that same year. After UTM discontinued its golf program, he transferred to Troy State where he was a member of the 1976 Division II national championship team.
