Charles Edward Smith served as UT Martin’s fifth chancellor from 1980-1985. He became chancellor of UT Martin in 1980 and served for five years before accepting a position as vice president of the UT System. He served in President George W. Bush’s administration as executive director of the Nation’s Report Card and has held leadership roles in education, journalism, and both state and federal government.
