Bobby Fowler captained the 1958 and the 1959 teams and led UT Martin in rushing each of his four years, compiling a record career total of 4,033 yards. In 1959, his last year, Fowler gained 1,045 yards, an average of 130.6 yards a game, rushing. In a 59-6 victory over West Georgia in 1957, Fowler scored five touchdowns, a UT Martin single-game record, and three conversions for a total of 33 points, another UT Martin single-game record. Fowler was named an NAIA All-American in 1959.
