MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field program split up its squads, sending athletes to compete at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. over the weekend.
The Skyhawks sent representatives to both outer coasts to compete against some of the nation's best competitors. The weekend would start at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday evening as
Alexis Grandys rolled to a PR of her own in the 5k with a time of 17:22.61.
The PRs continued on the following evening as both sophomores
Alex Schell (15.08.11) and
Daniel Smith (15:49.01) recorded strong times in Heat 8 of the 5k. Joining in the action was sophomore
Jhon-Wes Walker and
Austin Knight who posted season-best efforts in the 800m. The Skyhawks would wrap up their stay at the Bryan Clay Invitational as
Oisin O'Gailin recorded a time of 3:51.68 in the men's 1500m.
UT Martin proceeded 40 miles further towards the coast to compete at the Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Freshman
Breanna Roy kicked off the meet with a big PR in her first collegiate outdoor 5k, recording a time of 18:26.46. Then keeping with a theme of debuts, junior
Lydia Lee competed in the 10k where she finished second overall with a time of 38:32.31.
Junior
Leonel Perez would compete in the men's 800m while O'Gailin ran his second 1500m of the weekend, posting a nearly identical time as the day before at 3:51.79 to win his heat.
Back on the other side of the country at the Georgia Tech Invitational, reigning OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week
Brady Fry continued his record-setting freshman campaign with another standout performance. Much like in his last meet, Fry broke the program's 110m hurdles record with a time of 14.69 to best his previous time by .05 seconds.
The Skyhawks got another strong performance in the men's 3k steeplechase as
Tim Dye set a new PR with a time of 9:41.55.
UT Martin will return as a complete squad in the final tune-up before the OVC Outdoor Championships at the Memphis Invitational on Saturday, April 27.
