SKYHAWKS AGAIN FIND SUCCESS IN DOUBLES BUT FALL IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE AT EIU
DANVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team concluded the regular season this afternoon at Eastern Illinois, falling 5-2 to the host Panthers at the Danville Tennis Center.
The Skyhawks came through with the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match, earning wins at No. 3 and No. 1. After Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3, Eastern Illinois (12-12, 6-3 Ohio Valley Conference) won at No. 2 to force a winner-take-all matchup at No. 1. The UT Martin duo of Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter delivered in the clutch, winning by a 7-6 (8-6) margin at the top slot.
The Panthers won the first three singles decisions (No. 3, No. 4, No. 1) before Potter notched another point in the Skyhawk column with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2. However, Eastern Illinois rallied to win both the No. 6 and No. 5 singles head-to-head tilts to close out the match.
UT Martin officially enters next week’s OVC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 seed Austin Peay on Friday, April 20 in the first round. The match will begin at approximately 2 p.m. and will be held at the Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
