BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin senior Hunter Richardson joined elite company this morning as it was announced that the Clarksville, Tenn. native was named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Male Golfer of the Week.
Today’s announcement marks the 10th OVC weekly award for Richardson, who joins former Jacksonville State golfer Tomasz Anderson (14) and former Belmont golfer Ashton Van Horne (12) as the only players in conference history to win double-digit weekly honors.
Richardson, who was crowned as OVC Golfer of the Week five times as a junior and four times as a sophomore, is coming off the ninth medalist performance of his career. He rode a memorable Day 1 performance to a four-shot victory at the Murray State Invitational, compiling rounds of 68-64-71 (203, -10) to help UT Martin come in second place out of 14 teams in the event.
Richardson’s second round effort was one for the ages, as his career-best 64 was just three shots away from the course record at Miller Memorial Golf Course (which was built in 1982). That mark was held by former Murray State golfer Mark Brant in August 2006 while Richardson’s 64 was just one stroke shy of the best 18-hole Murray State Invitational round, set in 2005 by former Tennessee Tech golfer and current PGA Tour member Scott Stallings.
A three-time All-OVC recipient and back-to-back defending OVC Championship medalist, Richardson boasts a 67.7 scoring average through the early phases of his senior campaign.
The Skyhawks resume their fall slate next week (Sept. 18-19) when they head to Bluff City for the Memphis Intercollegiate, which will be held at Colonial Country Club.
