BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Two days after helping the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team to a big win at Austin Peay, Skyhawk left-handed pitcher Carter Smith was named the Ohio Valley Conference adidas Pitcher of the Week this afternoon.

Smith becomes the first Skyhawk to garner OVC Pitcher of the Week honors since Alec Mills picked up the award in Feb. 27, 2012.

Smith was electric out of the bullpen during Saturday’s 6-3 extra-inning victory, the Skyhawks’ first win in Clarksville since 2008. The junior out of St. Louis, Mo. tied a career-high with 7.1 innings pitched while fanning a career-high 12 batters, which is five more than his previous career-high. All in all, he had four multi-strikeout innings.

Smith entered the game in the third inning with the go-ahead runner on second base and no outs. He then pitched 5.1 innings of no-hit ball to keep the score knotted at 3-all before departing in the bottom of the ninth. The Skyhawks would score three runs in the top of the 12th to eventually claim the win.

Along with Taylor Cox and John Houston, Smith helped the Skyhawk pitching staff amass 19 strikeouts in the game – the most in an OVC contest since April 6, 2012. The pitching staff’s performance also fell just two strikeouts shy of the school record of 21, set in 1972 and again in 2002.

Smith has been one of UT Martin’s most trusted options in 2014, as he has posted a 4.88 ERA in 51.2 innings spread out over 16 appearances, including one start.
