CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team is gearing up for the home stretch in the Ohio Valley Conference race by picking up its second straight victory with a 5-2 decision at Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (6-8, 3-3 OVC) won the doubles point despite dropping the opening set as the veteran duo of Jessica Silva and Katie McCall picked up an 8-6 victory to even the doubles point at one. The freshmen pair of Burcu Tari and Hitomi Naito sealed the doubles point with a decisive 8-5 victory.
Moving into singles play, Tari got action started at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Ali Foster, moving to 11-3 in singles play. Eastern Illinois would proceed to win the next two sets at No. 3 and 6, evening the match at two sets apiece.
The Skyhawks would not waste their opportunity however, winning the following three matches to secure the 5-2 victory. Freshman Naito moved her record to 11-3 on the season with a 7-6, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Silva proceeded to rally from a first set loss, to ultimately win the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Senior Ivon Simic capped the day with a rally of her own, picking up the 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
UT Martin will look to continue its hot play tomorrow, Sunday, April 6 when traveling to SIU Edwardsville at 11 a.m.
