NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell victim to a big inning by Belmont and could not recover in a 5-1 loss in Ohio Valley Conference action at ES Rose Park.
The Skyhawks (3-24, 2-11 OVC) fell behind 4-0 after the second inning and would not get on the scoreboard until the top of the ninth. By that time, Belmont had tacked on another late run and held on for the victory.
Taylor Douglas generated his team-best ninth multi-hit outing this afternoon, going 2-for-4 and scoring the Skyhawks’ only run. Max Balter accounted for the second multi-hit performance of his career (2-for-3) while Ben Upton drove in a run for UT Martin.
On the mound, Taylor Cox (0-7) was charged with the loss after conceding four runs in two innings. Carter Smith pitched extremely well in relief, keeping the Skyhawks in the game by going six innings while allowing one run on four hits and tying a career-high with seven punchouts.
Cox induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the first inning but the Bruins pushed across four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second. Smith then appeared in the third and tallied a pair of strikeouts to set the tone for his successful outing.
Smith pitched around singles in both the fourth and fifth frames while notching a pair of strikeouts in the sixth.
Belmont (11-18, 3-7 OVC) added a run with a leadoff solo homer in the seventh but Smith limited the damage and ensured the score was still at 5-0 through seven innings of play.
The Skyhawks would see a pair of runners reach base in the seventh but an inning-ending double play erased UT Martin’s momentum.
After Smith made short work of the Bruins in the eighth, the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. Douglas roped a two-out double and five pitches later, Upton lined a single into center field to make the score 5-1. However, that would be the final baserunner that UT Martin could muster.
These two squads will continue their series on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
