MARTIN, Tenn. – A total of five University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian members were named to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association academic team, based off their grades from the spring 2013 and fall 2013 semesters.

Melanie Aiosa (3.49 GPA in ag communication major) earned elite, second team and honor roll accolades, while and Laney Hixson (3.28 GPA in animal science major) chalked up second team and honor roll mentions. Sarah Sutton (3.69 GPA in health and human performance major) and Sydney LaFreniere (3.65 GPA in communications major) made the NCEA honor roll while Kaylan Herbst (3.23 GPA in ag business major) was also named an honorable mention academic team member.

To qualify for the academic second team, a rider must have competed in 60 percent of her team’s meets while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25. To earn honorable mention academic honors, a rider must have participated in 50 percent of her team’s meets and must have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The NCEA academic honor roll recognizes the top academic student-athletes who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

UT Martin has qualified for its eighth consecutive postseason appearance, as it is seeded No. 11 in the upcoming NCEA national championships held in Waco, Texas on April 17-19.
