MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team burst out to a quick advantage after sweeping the doubles point before finishing the afternoon with a dominating 6-1 victory over visiting Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.
The Skyhawks (5-8, 2-3 OVC) turned to No. 1 doubles tandem of Ivon Simic and Sarah Candeloro to get action started with a decisive 8-1 match victory before No. 2 duo of Burcu Tari and Hitomi Naito continued the winning pace with an 8-1 decision of their own. Jessica Silva and Katie McCall finished the doubles sweep to clinch the point.
Simic continued on the winning track with a three-set victory over Valeriia Kashina (5-7 (5), 6-0, 6-0) in No. 1 singles. Naito took advantage of her new spot at No. 2, picking up a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory.
The Skyhawks tallied two decisive victories behind the play of Candeloro (6-0, 6-2) and Tari (6-0, 1-0) to wrap up the victory. Silva continued to the Skyhawks winning ways with a hard-fought victory at No. 5 against Annisa Warasanti, posting scores of 6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4).
“Maybe this win will get us going,” said UT Martin coach Dennis Taylor. “Ivon had been struggling all season but something clicked today and I believe she has found her game again. I will have to say that everyone played well. Let's hope we can keep this up.”
UT Martin will look to keep the momentum going in its next scheduled contest against Belmont on Wednesday, April 2. Action from the Skyhawk Tennis Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m.
