MARTIN, Tenn. – The NCEA announced this afternoon that the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team has locked in the No. 2 seed in the four-team independent championship field which will take place on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 at South Dakota State.
The Skyhawks will be out to earn their second straight nonconference championship, as UT Martin captured the inaugural independent title last season at a tournament held at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
Joining the Skyhawks in the independent championship field is No. 1 seed Fresno State, No. 3 seed Delaware State and No. 4 seed South Dakota State. UT Martin has not faced Fresno State this season but defeated Delaware State by a 17-3 margin on Jan. 24 and also turned away South Dakota State in a raw points tiebreaker on Sept. 27.
UT Martin spent five weeks as a top-10 nationally ranked squad earlier this season and will look to snare some momentum heading into the NCEA national championships, which will be held April 17-19 in Waco, Texas.
Both days of the independent championship are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the DeHaan Center.
