MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play when the Skyhawks travel to Murray State for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, March 15. The Skyhawks will be the visitors in the Racer Field grand opening with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend with a single game on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (9-13-1) opened the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Saint Louis. UT Martin picked up the 7-2 victory in the home opener before dropping game two of the doubleheader 4-3. Gabby Glenn was perfect at the plate on the day, going 5-for-5 with a triple, two runs and a walk. Deven Wilson provided the big punch on the day, tallying her first home run of the season while posting a .625 batting average and driving in three RBIs. Joining in the offensive performance was Samantha McClure who tallied a career-high three RBIs against the Billikens.
Freshman Elizabeth Wiegand (6-2) tallied her sixth win of her young career with a complete game. Wiegand tossed seven innings of work while striking out four, walking five and allowing two earned runs. Brooke Kennedy earned the start in game two, working four innings while striking out four and allowing two earned runs. Casey Vincent made her return to the rubber after battling through an injury, tossing three innings of work while allowing one earned run.
Offensively, the Skyhawks are led by Wilson who is currently batting .371 with eight doubles, one home run and 14 RBIs. Senior Kayla Wade has been equally impressive, batting .368 with two doubles, two triples, one home run, five RBIs and nine steals.
In the circle the Skyhawks have gone to Wiegand who has posted impressive numbers as a freshman. Wiegand leads the team with a 6-2 record, 11 starts, seven complete games and 67.2 innings of work. She has held opponents to a .230 batting average while posting a 2.69 ERA.
Murray State (11-8) has three players over the .300 mark led by Cayla Levins with a .340 batting average, two doubles, two triples and seven RBIs. Alexa Becker has been impressive, posting a .322 average with two doubles, a triple, five home runs and 13 RBIs. Inside the circle, the Racers are led by CheyAnne Gaskey (5-5, 4.06 ERA) and Mason Robinson (4-2, 1.75 ERA).
