DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team split a mid-week non-conference doubleheader against Bethune Cookman on Tuesday afternoon. The Skyhawks won game one 8-0 in five innings before dropping game two 8-6.
Game One: UT Martin 8, Bethune Cookman 0 (five innings)
The Skyhawks began their offensive route in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs. Kayla Wade led off the inning with double to right center before coming around to score on an RBI single by Deven Wilson who ultimately switched places with Wade following the throw. Wilson soon moved to third base on a balk, leaving the Skyhawks with a runner on third and no outs. The Wildcats would tally consecutive outs, but an error off the bat of Taylor Manning would bring Wilson to the plate.
UT Martin would put the game away in the top of the fifth inning, exploding for six runs on four hits. Samantha McClure began the inning with a leadoff single into right field. Junior Kelsey Dixon would then reach base on an error, following a sacrifice bunt attempt, leaving runners on first and second with no outs. Wade would keep the momentum going by reaching base on a well-placed bunt single, leaving the bases loaded as Wilson approached the dish. Much like the fourth inning, Wilson came through in the clutch again, lacing a two-RBI single to plate both McClure and Dixon.
The Skyhawks would not be done in the inning as senior Stephanie Nidiffer reached on another infield error while attempting a sacrifice bunt. Wade would eventually come around to score on a passed ball, giving the Skyhawks 5-0 lead. That margin would be short lived however, as Renate Meckl launched her second home run of the season to right center, scoring three runs.
Along with the run support, the Skyhawks got yet another solid pitching performance from the freshman Elizabeth Wiegand. Wiegand tossed a complete game shutout in five innings of work. She notched seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit.
Game Two: Bethune Cookman 8, UT Martin 6

Bethune Cookman would respond with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to blow the game wide open. The Wildcats led off the inning with a single field before the Skyhawks would retire the next two batters. Sophia Ortega would tally the Wildcats first RBI of the day on a RBI single into center field. A combination of an Ortega steal, a walk and a single set the Wildcats up with the bases loaded and two outs.
Remaining patient at the plate, BCU would draw a walk to take the 2-1 lead, scoring Ortega from third. Kelsey Rodney would savor the bases loaded opportunity, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double to right center. Kaitlin Alamprese would tally the final RBI of the inning with a single to right field, scoring Rodney from second.
The Skyhawks would look to make a comeback in the following inning, tallying three runs to cut the game’s margin. Lauren Smith led off the inning with a walk before being pulled for Bella Zizzi who made her impact felt immediately, swiping second. Back-to-back singles by Manning and Nidiffer would drive in Zizzi. Gabby Glenn would follow of the pair of hits with a RBI groundout to score Manning following a steal by Nidiffer. Nidiffer would eventually come around to score on a passed ball, trailing 6-4.
