TEXARKANA, Ark. – For the third time in five rodeos this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin cowboys emerged victorious after a 605-point showing at Cossatot Community College this weekend.
With the victory, the UT Martin men’s team will unofficially take over first place in the Ozark Region standings. The men’s squad entered this weekend with a No. 12 national ranking.
The UT Martin women’s team also took part in this weekend’s festivities, tallying 85 points to finish in sixth place.
In bareback riding, Tyler Waltz finished first in average (148) after solid rounds of 73 and 75. Colt Kitaif placed second in average (145) after finishing first in the second go with a 76. Tanner Phipps came in third in the event with a 137 average.
Ben Walker (18.9 average) finished in second place in calf roping, including an event-best 9.5 score in the short go. Jacob Dagenhart (10.9 first go) and Will Lummus (11.2 first go) also earned points for UT Martin.
Lummus finished first in steer wrestling with an average of 10.1 (4.4 first go, 5.7 short go). Lane Mitchell earned third place honors with an average of 15.4 while Dagenhart’s 12.6 performance in the short go gave him a fourth place finish.
In team roping, Cody Inman teamed with Nelson Wyatt from Troy University to produce a third place finish in the first go (6.3) and fifth place finish overall.
Jerry Rogers earned first place honors in bull riding average (74) after a solid performance in the first go.
On the women’s side, Micayla Gray split fourth place in breakaway roping with an average of 3.1 on 1. Gray placed fifth in goat tying with an 18.5 average while Natalie Fletcher (9.3) captured fourth place in the short go.
In the first go of barrel racing, Katie Brown (14.79) split second while Dacia Horne (14.84) came in fourth.
UT Martin is off next weekend but will be back in action on March 6-8 when it travels to Arkansas-Monticello.
