CHOCTAW, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team shot a second round 307 but still managed to capture second place honors at the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate, hosted by Jackson State at the Dancing Rabbit Oaks Club.

The Skyhawks slipped 11 shots from their first round score but their final tally of 603 (+27) was still nine shots better than the third place team. Missouri-St. Louis, who led after the first round, earned first place accolades with a score of 590 (+14).

UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter was disappointed with his team’s effort in the final day of the tournament.

“This is a tournament that we could have and should have won,” Carpenter said. “We played well on the first day and put ourselves in position to win. Today, we played like we’ve never played golf. There were bad decisions made and bad execution. I know it’s early and we haven’t played much outside but this was unacceptable. We will go back to work and probably make some changes.”

Sophomore Ben Reeves shot an even-par 72 in the second round to finish in a tie for fifth (147, +3). Brendon Caballero finished right behind in eighth place with a final tally of 148 (+4) after a 76 in today’s round.

Tyler Shellnut (80 today; 154 overall, +10), Tyler Guy (79; 156, +12), Clay Harbin (81; 156, +12) and Austin Swafford (76; 161, +17) also contributed to the Skyhawks’ final tally.

UT Martin returns to action on March 9-11 when it hosts the Grover Page Classic at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
