MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will take a break from its homestand when the Skyhawks travel to Ohio Valley Conference East member Morehead State. Tip-off from Ellis T. Johnson Arena is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. in game two of the doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (12-6, 5-0) come into the matchup fresh off an offensive explosion against Southeast Missouri. In a game which was never in doubt, the Skyhawks cruised to a 100-71 victory. Senior guard Heather Butler led four players in double figures, tossing in 22 points. Jasmine Newsome tallied 16 points while the freshman duo of Ashia Jones and Tiara Caldwell scored 15 and 12 points respectively.
En route to the duo of Butler and Jones taking home their own respective OVC Player and Freshman of the Week honors, Butler now sits at the cusp of history. She needs just 20 points to match OVC and Tennessee Tech great Cheryl Taylor (2,526 points) for the league’s all-time scoring record while 21 points or more would be the outright record. Newsome currently sits in seventh on the league’s leaderboard with 2,301 career points.
Morehead State (8-9, 2-2 OVC) is riding a two game losing streak, dropping back-to-back game against Eastern Kentucky (79-58) and Austin Peay (83-75). The Eagles are led in scoring by senior Terrice Robinson who averages 18.4 points per game. Robinson is joined in double figures by Almesha Jones who scores at an 11.2 points per game clipping.
This marks the 44th matchup between the Skyhawks and Eagles with Morehead State holding the slim 24-19 series advantage. The Skyhawks have won four consecutive meetings between the two teams, including an 81-61 road victory on Jan. 23, 2012.
