BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the second consecutive week, the Ohio Valley Conference has announced that a member of the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team has been named adidas OVC Player of the Week. Senior guard Heather Butler picked up the honor after a spectacular trio of performances over the last week.
A Medina, Tenn. native, Butler paired back-to-back 30 point performances against Missouri (36) and Evansville (34) over the past week to average 31.7 points while adding six rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. She tallied an impressive 15 made three-pointers during the three game stretch, moving into first on the league’s leaderboard with 25.3 points per game this season.
Butler continued her historic pace as her 36 point performance against Missouri moved Butler into first atop the all-time UT Martin list for most field goals made with 751. Butler’s current mark of 762 career field goals made, passed the previous mark of 747 by Mary Kate Long, which stood since 1989.
With her 34 points performance against Evansville, Butler moved into seventh on the OVC’s all-time scoring list with 2,263 career points. Butler passed Tennessee Tech’s Jerilynn Harper who compiled 2,238 points from 1979-82. She now needs just 25 points to continue climbing the OVC list and move into sixth place.
This marks the second consecutive week that a Skyhawk has earned OVC Player of the Week honors after Jasmine Newsome was named Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 19. Overall, the Skyhawks have placed a member of the team on all three of the OVC’s weekly awards lists.
Butler and the Skyhawks will return to action this weekend when they take on Winthrop on Friday, Nov. 29 at the Robert Morris Thanksgiving Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa. Action from day one of the two-day tournament is set to get underway at 3 p.m. Central time.
