Women’s Top 50

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Tipoff Club has announced the addition of University of Tennessee at Martin senior guard Jasmine Newsome to the 2013-14 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T Early Season 50-Player Watch List for women’s basketball.

Newsome has continued to impress in her senior campaign, ranking second on the team and in the Ohio Valley Conference with 22.8 points per game. Included in her high-powered offensive season is a school record 44-point performance against Quinnipiac on Nov. 16. The reigning OVC Player of the Week, Newsome became just the second 2,000 point scorer in UT Martin history while ranking atop several program records.

A Millington, Tenn. native, Newsome is no stranger to individual honors after being named the program’s first Associated Press All-American last season. In addition to Naismith considerations, she has been named College Sports Madness Preseason All-Mid Major Player of the Year and Madness Mid-Major All-American, as well as Madness and OVC Preseason Player of the Year.

The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious trophy in college basketball. The Naismith was first awarded to the men’s college basketball player of the year in 1969 (Lew Alcindor, UCLA). In 1983, the Naismith Awards also began recognizing the women’s college basketball player of the year (Anne Donovan, Old Dominion).

Every November the board of selectors, comprised of coaches, administrators and media from across the country, chooses the preseason top 50 “watch list”.

In February, the Naismith voting academy narrows the list to the top 30 based on athletic performance. In March, the voting academy will select four finalists who will go to the final ballot. The winner is selected by a board of selectors vote in conjunction with fan voting.

Newsome and the Skyhawks return to action tonight as they take on non-conference opponent Evansville. Tip-off from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
