JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Madison Wessling slammed down a match-high 11 kills for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team but the Skyhawks fell 3-0 to Jacksonville State (15-25, 19-25, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon. UT Martin concludes the season with a 9-23 record and 3-13 Ohio Valley Conference mark.
Today’s performance was the seventh match of 10-plus kills for the freshman Wessling. Amanda Crask handed out 22 assists while Chelsea Bowles’ 14 digs led the way for the Skyhawk defense.
Jacksonville State took early leads of 5-1 and 9-2 in the first set but the Skyhawks accounted for seven of the next 10 points to pull within three points (12-9). UT Martin trailed 15-11 but the Gamecocks ran off six straight points to go ahead 21-11. The Skyhawks would follow with a 4-2 run but it wasn’t enough to salvage the set.
Bowles had six digs in the first set to lead UT Martin defensively.
The lead swayed back-and-forth in the early stages of the second set. Back-to-back service aces by Crask capped off a 4-0 Skyhawk run that gave UT Martin a 9-8 advantage. Jacksonville State then scored three straight points but the Skyhawks would answer right back to even the score at 11-all. The Gamecocks would later turn a two-point lead to five at 18-13 until a Wessling kill stopped Jacksonville State’s run. A kill by Emily Keaton pulled UT Martin within four at 22-18 but Jacksonville State would score three of the final four points in the set.
After the Gamecocks led 5-2 in the third set, UT Martin unreeled a 5-2 run of its own to tie the score at 7-all courtesy of a Crask kill. Jacksonville State led 11-8 but the Skyhawks surged ahead 13-12 thanks to two kills by Wessling. The set was tied at 17-all until three straight Gamecock points but UT Martin would pull back within one point on five more occasions (including 23-22) until Jacksonville State closed out the match with two straight kills.
Wessling had five kills on eight swings to pace the Skyhawks in the third set.
