CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell by a 3-0 margin (24-26, 24-26, 9-25) to Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri this evening at Houck Field House.

Amanda Crask tallied her 12th double-double of the season with 30 assists and 11 digs tonight for UT Martin (9-22, 3-12 OVC). Allie Whimpey led the Skyhawks with nine kills while Emily Keaton and Madison Wessling chipped in eight kills apiece to lead the offense. Chelsea Bowles scooped up a team-best 15 digs to guide UT Martin defensively.

The Skyhawks trailed 4-3 in the first set but would soon go on a 7-1 run to go ahead 10-5 courtesy of a service ace by Michelle McLaughlin. Southeast Missouri would go on a small run to cut its deficit to 13-12 but Whimpey answered with a kill to help the Skyhawks eventually push their lead out 16-13. Southeast Missouri accounted for three straight points to even the score but Wessling came right back with a kill to keep the lead in UT Martin’s favor. Southeast Missouri would take a lead and the two teams would swap the advantage three more times until the score was knotted at 24-all. However, the Redhawks scored the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

Whimpey (five kills), Crask (14 assists) and Bowles (nine digs) helped guide UT Martin in the first set, as the Skyhawks hit .304 (17 kills against three errors) in 46 attempts.

UT Martin was responsible for a 6-3 lead in the second set thanks to a pair of kills by Julia Devinney. The Skyhawk lead remained at three (10-7) before Southeast Missouri scored five unanswered points to take the lead. UT Martin would soon go on a 4-0 run of its own, surging ahead 17-16 off a McLaughlin service ace. The Redhawks would go on top 19-18 but the Skyhawks reeled off six of the next eight points to get within set point at 24-21. However, Southeast Missouri was able to come up with four straight points to get the win.

Keaton’s four kills and Crask’s 12 assists led UT Martin in the second set.

After the Skyhawks scored the first point of the third set, Southeast Missouri scored 11 straight points. Whimpey would register a pair of kills in the set but the Redhawks jumped out to a 23-8 lead before closing out the set soon thereafter.

UT Martin closes out the season on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a road match at Jacksonville State. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
