BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Ohio Valley Conference championships will boast a new color during the 2013-14 year:green. The idea and work of the OVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the "Go Green" initiative will combine recycling efforts with promotion of waste reduction.
Beginning with the cross country championship last weekend in Morehead, Ky., fans will notice additional collection containers for plastic bottles and paper throughout the facility. Campus SAAC members from the host institution will be on hand to collect recyclable materials and ensure that those materials are disposed of properly. In addition, spectators are encouraged to bring plastic bottles or cans with them to the championship event – those that bring at least 24 bottles or cans to the event will receive an OVC reusable grocery tote.
For those championships at which admission is charged, reduced admission may also be offered to those that bring the requisite number of bottles and cans. Check each championship specific webpage for more information related to admission prices.
"As athletes, we are blessed to be in our community's spotlight and this calls us to be responsible and virtuous individuals that our student body and the public can look to for courage, leadership, guidance and hope" comments Jarred Koerner, OVC SAAC representative from Murray State University. "It is our goal that we not only create a successful program that allows people to recycle more, but also encourages others to recycle on their own as well."
In addition to the recycling efforts during each championship, all championship tournament programs will be available in digital form via links on the OVC championship webpage (sport specific). For this weekend's soccer championship, click here.
OVC reusable grocery totes will also be available at the official championship merchandise table during each event. Fans who purchase a minimum of $30 worth of championship merchandise will receive a reusable grocery tote free. The grocery totes will also be available for purchase.
