MARTIN, Tenn. – For the fourth time this season, a University of Tennessee at Martin player has been recognized by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association as senior running back DJ McNeil was named the TSWA Offensive Football Player of the Week this afternoon.
A 6-2, 205-pound Collierville, Tenn. native, McNeil set new career-highs with 27 carries and 148 rushing yards in UT Martin’s 17-7 road victory at Southeast Missouri in its Ohio Valley Conference opener last Saturday. It was the second 100-plus yard rushing game of the season and third of his collegiate career.
McNeil is currently the OVC’s leading rusher at 111.8 yards per game, while ranking second in all-purpose yards (124.0 yards per game) and ninth in total offense (111.8 yards per game). He has accounted for game-highs in rushing attempts in all four games this season while helping guide UT Martin to a 3-1 record and national No. 22 ranking.
McNeil found the endzone in each of the first three contests of the season (two rushing, one receiving). He has 16 rushing touchdowns in his career, which is tied for sixth all-time in UT Martin history.
The Skyhawks return home this weekend for a Homecoming matchup against OVC rival Jacksonville State. Kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 5 is set for 2 p.m. at Hardy Graham Stadium.
