MARTIN, Tenn. – After making a game-high 12 tackles in the University of Tennessee at Martin’s big win over No. 7 Central Arkansas last Saturday, Ben Johnson has been recognized as a Football Championship Subdivision National Linebacker of the Week by Beyond Sports Network.
Johnson and Gardner-Webb’s Tanner Burch (13 tackles) were named the BSN National Linebackers of the Week.
A 6-2, 235-pound redshirt senior, Johnson helped anchor a defensive attack that shut out the high-powered Central Arkansas offense in the first half. It was the second time that UT Martin had held a nationally-ranked offense scoreless at halftime this season. The Skyhawks would eventually knock off the Bears by a 24-23 margin to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Five of Johnson’s tackles were solo stops while he also added a half-tackle-for-loss. The Primm Springs, Tenn. native ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 27 tackles (14 solo) while adding two tackles-for-loss and one pass breakup through three games.
UT Martin’s next game is slated for Saturday, Sept. 28 when it opens OVC play at Southeast Missouri.
