MARTIN, Tenn. – J’vontez Blackmon, from the University of Tennessee at Martin football team, was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week this afternoon.
Blackmon and Vanderbilt’s Jordan Matthews (Offensive Player of the Week) earned TSWA weekly honors for football.
The 6-0, 193-pound safety played a big part in UT Martin’s road victory at No. 24 Chattanooga in the season-opener on Aug. 29. Blackmon came up with six tackles but it was his huge interception in the second quarter that turned the momentum in UT Martin’s direction. With the score tied at 0-0, he stepped in front of a Jacob Huesmann pass and returned it 24 yards to get the Skyhawks into the red zone.
Two plays later, UT Martin took a 7-0 lead and never trailed for the duration of the game. It was the third career interception in 12 games for Blackmon, who hails from Bryam, Miss.
Blackmon and the Skyhawks return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Boise State. Kickoff time is set for 2 p.m. CST.
