NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team wasted little time on the evening to break into the scoring column for the first time this season, as goals by Abi Sanvee and Aoife Lennon elevate the Skyhawks to the 2-0 victory at Lipscomb.
The Skyhawks (1-2-1) relied on goals by senior Abi Sanvee in the 10th minute while freshman Aoife Lennon would later find the back of the net in the 29th minute to secure the victory. Fellow freshman Ellie Myrick would be credited with an assist on Sanvee’s goal. UT Martin was led in the shot column by Dominika Conc with four, while Hannah McGowen and Lennon each tallied three shots of their own.
Tonight’s result marked as the 10th career shutout for Mariah Klenke, moving the junior into a tie for the all-time UT Martin shutout record. Notching her second shutout of the season, Klenke registered three saves on the evening.
Lennon nearly got the evening started off with a bang early, tallying the first shot of the evening which deflected off the post in the fourth minute.
Action would soon pick up as the Skyhawks scored their first goal of the young season off of a corner kick by Myrick to Sanvee. With a well-placed ball off the foot of Myrick, Sanvee used a header to break into the score column at the 9:29 mark.
Lipscomb would then issue two consecutive shots over the span of three minutes, but Klenke would tally her first save of the night at the 12:18 mark.
The Skyhawks would continue their aggressive pace in the 29th minute as Lennon picked up a deflection six yards out, rifling a shot into the right corner of the net to tally the freshman’s first career goal.
UT Martin would exchange shot attempts throughout the remainder of the first period, taking a 7-2 advantage in the shot column into the intermission.
Lipscomb would open the second period with a shot on goal at the 47:30 mark, but Klenke would register her second save of the evening.
Conc would get involved in the action, registering two consecutive shots on goal over the course of two minutes. Conc would register a game-high four shots on goal.
McGowen fired the Skyhawks final shot on goal at the 74:10 mark, but Lipscomb’s Anna Buhigas would pick up her fourth save of the night.
Lipscomb final attempt at goal came at the 89:06 mark, but Klenke quickly wrangled the ball for her third and final save of the evening, cementing the shutout.
UT Martin will continue their four-game road trip with a visit to Denver, Colo. to play in the Denver Invitational at CIBER Field. The Skyhawks will open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 6 when they play host Denver (4-0) at 8 p.m. CST before shifting their focus to Big 12 member Colorado (4-0) on Sunday, Sept. 8 at noon CST.
