BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Sophomores Chelsea Bowles and Amanda Crask from the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team were recognized by the Ohio Valley Conference this afternoon. Bowles shared adidas OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors while Crask was named adidas OVC Setter of the Week.

This marks the first OVC weekly accolade for both Bowles and Crask, who both hail from Louisville, Ky.

The duo helped UT Martin win the CEFCU Classic hosted by Bradley University over the weekend. The Skyhawks defeated two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Maryland-Eastern Shore by a 3-0 margin on Friday and fell to Western Illinois 3-1 on Saturday before recovering to down Bradley 3-1 in the de facto tournament championship match. It was the second season-opening tournament championship that UT Martin had claimed in the last three seasons, as they also won the Mississippi State Maroon Classic in 2011.

A 5-4 libero, Bowles was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She recorded 17 digs in each of the first two matches before tallying a match-high 24 digs in the final game against Bradley. For the weekend, she tallied 58 digs for an average of 5.27 per set.

Crask recorded a .462 attack percentage in the victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore and followed that by nearly recording a triple-double (nine kills, 32 assists, 10 digs) against Western Illinois. In the tournament finale against Bradley, she was responsible for eight kills, 45 assists, eight digs and four blocks. She finished the weekend with 109 assists (9.91 per set) and guided the Skyhawks to a .275 attack percentage.

UT Martin will hold its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against Evansville at 6:30 p.m. The first 150 students with a valid student ID will receive free pizza.
