MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2013 season officially gets underway this weekend for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team, as it will play three matches in two days at the CEFCU Classic in Peoria, Ill., hosted by Bradley University.

The Skyhawks return seven players and four starters from last year’s squad that went 10-21 with a 6-10 Ohio Valley Conference record. This will be the first of four tournaments that UT Martin will take part in over the season’s first four weekends.

UT Martin will start off head coach Darrin McClure’s sixth season by taking on Maryland-Eastern Shore in the season-opener on Friday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks will then square off against Western Illinois on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. before closing out the tournament with a match against host Bradley at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks have never faced Maryland-Eastern Shore or Bradley and have only played Western Illinois twice (1997, 1999).

Maryland-Eastern Shore has won back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships, tallying a 28-6 record in 2012. The Hawks return one player from last season’s squad and are coached by Millicent Van Norden, who enters her first season at the helm of the Maryland-Eastern Shore program.

The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks are coming off an 11-17 season in 2012, competing in the Summit League. Second-year head coach April Hall returns nine players and five starters from last year’s squad.

Bradley returns 10 players and five starters from a team who went 9-20 last year while competing in the Missouri Valley Conference. Head coach Jenny Maurer is in her third season guiding the Braves program.
