MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin linebacker Ben Johnson has been recognized as a 2013 Preseason All-American by Beyond Sports Network (BSN).
This marks the second accolade in 10 days for Johnson, as he was also named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason linebacker watch list on June 10. Johnson is one of 100 overall Football Championship Subdivision players and 12 linebackers on the BSN preseason All-American squad.
The 6-2, 235-pound Johnson is coming off an outstanding season in 2012, as his 11.9 tackles per game ranked sixth in the FCS. All in all, he ranked atop the Ohio Valley Conference with 131 tackles (60 solo) while ranking fourth in the league in sacks (four). He also recorded five tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one quarterback hurry and one pass breakup.
Johnson’s 131 tackles in 2012 was the seventh-highest single-season total in UT Martin football history, earning him a spot on the All-OVC first team. The Primm Springs, Tenn. native accumulated eight or more tackles in all 11 games, including double-digit stops on eight occasions. He made a career-best 17 tackles against Jacksonville State on Nov. 3 and added 16 stops against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 6. He also tallied 13 tackles (10 solo) at Football Bowl Subdivision member Northern Illinois on Sept. 8.
Johnson enters the 2013 campaign just 17 tackles away from entering UT Martin’s career top-10 list for all-time tackles. He has racked up 228 tackles while starting all 22 games in each of the past two seasons for the Skyhawks.
