CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t muster enough offense to stage a comeback this afternoon, falling 9-0 to Eastern Illinois at Coaches Stadium.
The Panthers scored all nine of their runs in the first three innings before redshirt senior Nick Wilson slammed the door, firing a career-high 5.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The Oviedo, Fla. native allowed just three hits and a walk, eclipsing his previous career-high of 2.1 innings set against Belmont earlier this season.
Sophomore shortstop Nico Zych was responsible for two of UT Martin’s three hits today, while redshirt senior Kyle Bargery also hit safely for the fourth straight game. Byron Johann and Luis Paublini also each drew a walk to round out the baserunners for the Skyhawks (11-39, 4-25 Ohio Valley Conference).
On the mound, starting pitcher Taylor Cox (0-7) was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs over 2.1 frames.
Eastern Illinois accounted for two runs in the first, two in the second and five runs in the third before Wilson entered the game and induced an inning-ending double play on the first pitch he threw.
Wilson then retired the side in order in the fourth. UT Martin got a pair of baserunners on in the fifth but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.
Wilson then did a masterful job of pitching around leadoff singles in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to strand all three runners and continue to put zeroes up on the scoreboard. He then ended his night with a perfect 11-pitch inning in the eighth.
However, all the while the Skyhawks could not get any offense going against Eastern Illinois starter Matt Borens, who completed his complete game shutout with by retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth.
UT Martin – who won Game 1 of this series 4-3 on Thursday – will go for the series victory on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
